Our founders started with the idea that precious metals and minerals deposited within asteroids would one day be in high demand.  Current technology was already capable of mining and retrieving such deposits.  (For a good introduction to the methods behind such a venture we recommend the PERMANENT website http://www.permanent.com/  )  However, the cost of doing so would be too high to emerge with a profit.  Thus, those resources remained untouched.

As the human population rises and our level of technological achievment grows two things are inevitable.  The demand for finite resources on earth will grow, and the costs/risks of such a retrieval project will decline.  It is not a question of whether a market will emerge, but when.

Left purely an issue of resources it could be decades before the market is ready.  Enter the asteroid originally designated 2004 MN4, but better known as Apophis.
